Are there pre-requisites for Lifeguard class?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Participants must have the online modules of training completed by the start of the in person hands-on skills day. Failure to do so will result in being dropped from the course with no refund.

On the first day of class participants will need to demonstrate the following skills successfully.

Part 1 - Swim-tread- swim sequence without stopping or resting
 • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. 
 • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only legs
 • Immediately swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Part 2 Brick Test - Timed Event 1 minute and 40 seconds
 • Candidate must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 pound object from 7 feet of water 
 • Return to starting position while swimming on back within 100 seconds (swim goggles are not permitted for brick portion).

How long does the Blended Learning take?

Time varies person to person but the online learning can take anywhere from 7 - 10 hours so please plan accordingly to finish these trainings before the first day of your course. You will not be able to complete the course without them!

How do I access the Blended Learning?

Accepted Answer

You should have an email to access the online learning, but you can also access them here! Be sure to select the correct course. Completion of the online learning alone does not result in certification. Participants MUST register and attend in full all in person sessions of their course and complete all components successfully!

New Cert - For individuals without a current certification. 
Recert - For individuals with a current certification that are renewing prior to expiration.

Question 4

I'm having trouble with the Blended Learning content. What do I do?

Unfortunately technological issues do happen with the Blended Learning content. This course is administered through the Red Cross, so we are not able to fix the back end on our side. If you are having technological issues with the online portion of the class please reach out to Red Cross support for more assistance. For fastest assistance we recommend using the chat feature that is embedded in the Red Cross Learning Center.

Question 5

What should I bring with me to lifeguard class?

We will be in and out of the water each day here's a recommended list of things to bring!

• Bathing Suit
 • Towel(s)
 • Change of clothes
 • Snacks/Lunch
 • Water bottle
 • Proof of completed online learning lessons (email or printed certificate)

If your course is in May or later your lifeguard class will be OUTDOORS! Please include sun protection in your materials.

Question 6

I have a conflict with just 1 day of the course. Can I schedule a make up for this day?

Accepted Answer

Per Red Cross standards participants must attend all sessions of their scheduled course in full. We are unable to facilitate a make up by attending one day of a different course as instructors and course pace varies from class to class.

If you have a conflict with your existing class we would be happy to assist you in transferring to one of our other courses that works for you. Please submit any transfer requests via the transfer request form. Please see the transfer policy for full details on qualifying for transfer.

Question 7

What is the refund/cancellation policy?

Accepted Answer

Cancellations made with at least 10 days notice will be eligible for a full refund. Cancellation requests after this up to 5 days before the first day of the course will be eligible for 50% refund.

No refunds will be issued for late withdrawals (within 5 days of class start date). This includes no shows, failure to complete online training or failure to meet prerequisite requirements on the first day of class. Can I request a transfer to change my class registration?

Accepted Answer

Yes! You can request a transfer at no cost with 5 or more days' notice prior to the start of your course. Each participant can request up to 1 no cost transfer. Additional transfers will incur a $75 fee. Transfer requests made with less than 5 days notice prior to the start of the course fall under our cancellation policy and may not be eligible for refund.

Question 9

What is the inclement weather policy for lifeguard classes?

Accepted Answer

Class will not be canceled due to inclement weather a majority of the time. If there is a severe weather event you will be contacted if there is a change in your course schedule.

We do not get in the water during active thunderstorms, however there are many skills and content in the course that are conducted out of the water that can be safely facilitated at these times. We do still enter the water in the rain to conduct skill practice and class.

How do I find my certification after completing the course?

Processing time by the Red Cross varies, but typically 3-5 business days after successfully completing your course you will receive an email with your digital certification.
